Smalley's: Lights, Camera, Cooperstown! Exhibition
Smalley's: Lights, Camera, Cooperstown! is displayed at the New York State Historical Association from May 2014 through March 2016. The exhibit explores what the theatre did for the rural community.
The exhibit explored how Smalley's Theatre brought the diverse community together and showed the small town a bit of life in far off places.
The lighting and curtains were created to give the feeling of being in a theatre without having to make the room dark. Chairs from the theatre were lent by its final owners who allow visitors to sit in them.
We wanted to incorporate the iconic Smalley's marquee imagery somewhere in our exhibit. The master labels were designed to appear as though they fit inside a marquee design.
We utilized the case outside the exhibition room to catch visitors' attentions and invite them in.
Our design went through a number of drafts, first on paper followed quickly by Adobe products. This shows the initial design for the Come One, Come All! wall.
An initial idea was also to incorporate moving pictures into the exhibit by using an iPad with the Turner Classic Movies app, but the museum's iPads could not be spared for the whole length of the exhibit
Our penultimate design that still had quite a bit of work before our final product as shown above.
One of my teammates made the curtains to give the feeling of an old black-and-white theatre. A worker for the museum also lent us his old home-projector that was placed in the middle of the room, facing the screen
